12 Steps to start your year with the best plan possible

Share

The year is winding down and the New Year is nearly here. Many of you will be stating your New Year resolutions. They can be related to careers, finances, fitness, nutrition, education, family, and so much more. Right now you are determined to bring about some action or change by these Resolutions.

Unfortunately, before long you give up as you lose motivation. It’s said that 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail for a number of reasons, but the main problem is that people don’t start with a plan.

Simply take some time out right mow to set yourself up for your best year yet.

Here is what to do to start off your year with the best plan possible:

1. Take time for reflection.

When planning for the year ahead, it is important to take a look back at the year you’ve completed. Not to dwell, but to celebrate what you’ve actually accomplished, and learn from the things that were not so fun at the time.

2. Score your Life

Look at all the major areas of your life and assess how well you are doing in each, alternatively, how badly. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being excellent, 1 being awful rate the key areas such as Financial, Social Life, Professional Life, Possessions, Health & Fitness, Passion, Relationships and Mind and Personal Growth.

3. Determine the 4 most important things to change

Having scored yourself for each area, ask yourself what change would make the biggest improvement in my life. Ask yourself this for each area. Once you have done this, determine the 4 most important changes you need to focus on over the next year.

4. Imagine if life were perfect

I now suggest you find a quiet space and for the next 30 minutes meditate and think of your perfect life in 10 years time if everything from this moment forward goes perfectly. See it act out infront of you. Where are you? Who are you with? What are your suroundings?

5. What Do You Want To Be, Do And Have List

Brainstorm everything you want to be, do and have in your life in the next few years. Write anything and everything down! We’ll be narrowing down this list later so just go crazy with it. Think about health goals, career goals, relationship goals, and financial goals. Anything that pops in your head should go on your list. It may be difficult to think of ideas at first but once you get rolling, the ideas will flow. Imagine that there are no limitations on what you can be, have or do. Just get it all down.

6. One massive Breakthrough Goal

Now you need to decide on the one big goal that will be the key focus for you this year. Your breakthrough goal is that one goal that can bring about the best improvement for you in the next 365 days. Others call it a BHAG. Big Hairy Audacious goal. You need to create a clear and compelling outcome that you are making your focus for the next 365 days. Look back at all the changes you thought of but more particularly the 4 you chose that will really impact your life in the next 12 months. These 4 changes are then at the heart of your breakthrough goal, which once achieved will enable you to be, do or have many of the life goals you listed earlier.

Ask yourself this question. What one major goal that could be achieved in the next 365 days would bring about your four changes and go the furthest to totally transform your life, better than it has ever been?

7. Short Term 365 Day Goals

Now break down your breakthrough goal into 4 specific goals the achievement of which will bring about your breakthrough goal. Write these on to your single page plan.

8. Long Term Objectives

Your long term objectives are there as a beacon. They will constantly be in your vision, reminding you of what ultimately you wish to achieve in your life. Every breakthrough goal and 365 day goal will be working towards these long term targets. What do you have to make sure you’re doing for the long term?

9. Powerful Reasons Why

You now need to give yourself for why your goals are must do’s. Go through your four short term goals and think of all the reasons these goals are truly important to you. You have to understand what really drives you, your WHY. This is what truly gets you up in the morning instead of rolling over and going back to sleep. The empowering reasons, white-hot burning reasons, for setting your specific goals. You need to know these before you focus on the HOW of achieving them. If the WHY is big enough, the HOW is easy.

10. Work out your Priority 365 Day Action Steps

These are steps, actions, and tasks, you must take to achieve your short term/365 day goals over the next 12 months. You’re going to look at each of your 365-day goals set in the where section and work out the exact steps you will need to take to achieve them. You need to determine the activities you need to take to bring about your short-term goals. This determines for you exactly what you need to be doing if you genuinely want to achieve these goals. Work out every action you need to take to attain each goal and then categorise them into four high valued activities. Write these high valued activities on to your single page plan.

11. Measure everything

It is essential that you measure progress towards your goals. Whatever your goal you’ll get there faster by tracking and measuring how you’re doing. Decide on one result you can measure and one activity that will demonstrate you are advancing forward to your goals. Write these into your single page plan.

12. This Year’s Theme

You now need to set for yourself a theme for this coming year. An expression of how this year will be for you, the demonstration of the person you will be. Now determine your theme and write it on to your single page plan.

Do all of this and you will have a plan that can change your life, if you use it. Work from your plan every single day. Every week monitor your progress and look at your performance. Are you following through.

Happy New Year – may it be your best year yet!
